Rear bumper beam.. missing?

Post by Bio » Tue Jul 24, 2012 3:18 pm

Hi Guys,

Having taking the bumper off my 5th I've noticed I have no rear bumper beam that is detailed in the shop manual as should exist and attached to the lower section.
I'm now a little worried about what this car has been through if this is missing!

Should UK 5th's actually have this or was it maybe something specific to the USDM models, and hence in the shop manual?

In most cases the service manual should be taken literally, however there are a few differences between USDM, JDM, and UKDM. The US got big foam inserts that go under the bumper covers, its seems that its law to have it in the US. The foam insert attacheds to the lower bar on US ludes.

Here is one from the rear of a 4G:

Sooo, as it's missing, I should probably be worried that it's been rear ended at some point and the bar was simply removed?
I don't mind saving weight, but not at the expense of safety!

It should have one, it supports most of the weight of the rear bumper!

Here's a pic of mine so you can see how it looks:

Look out for a Prelude being broken, and pick up a bumper bar.

If your rear looks like Rob's above, or this:

Its perfectly normal. Only the US got the lower bumper support bar.

Ah ha, but you don't have one either! According to the manual it should be affixed to the square holes in the lower section.
The upper part, I do have :D

The lower part is the bit I meant, The upper, I do have, and it's rusty as ya like ;)

Glad it was a US only thing then.

Are you talking about the bumper bar attached to bumper with clips or a crossmember (which it wont have)?

That's my car!

Anyway, Merlin is right, we haven't got that lower bar as the fog light(s) is in the way.
