Engine bay cleaning........

Ok seen as the sun is set to shine in Scotland for a few days, I have decided to clean the engine bay with degreaser etc. What parts of the engine should be protected from the degreaser and water? Fuse box, Distributor but is there anything else?

I've always just pressure washed the lot.

Only a mist over the FREDs; don't blast 'em!

Finish with some interior dressing & dry it off with a cloth.

At work we have always aplied a mixture of TFR and tar & glue remover to the engine bay then blasted off everywhere with jet wash. Just not to much on the obvious areas then dried and removed stubborn grease again with tardis. Spray over a interior dressing switch engine on and let it heat it up gets a really nice glossy finish on it

Spray bh ferrosol onto the electrics then cover with sandwich bags, bh surfex hd everywhere and blast your end away.

wiggz and ratty combined i say

then a set of three little wire/plastic brushes from halfrauds and a little pot of solvent/petrol to bring a shine to the intake mani, ps pump etc and a good spray over with silicone spray and a cloth to finish.

ive got a load of full valets on today ill post up a before and after of how it looks when we do it, got 11 full valets arriving at 12 today for 1 of our dealer contracts busy weekend, we use Autosmart products if you go on ebay and search for Autosmart finish you just spray it all over the plastics and metal work in the engine bay after your degreasing and leave it to dry on with the engine running leaves a great finish on it

Halfrauds used to sell a double aerosol kit for engine detailing...I used it a few times-always came out well.
Basically, just a tin of degreaser, rinse, tin of detailer, and let dry. You can achieve similar results with gunk (although a bit smelly) and silicon spray.

However, knowing how good the BH products are, the Surfex HD would be brilliant to degrease....so I think I will try this in my JAE preps.....

When I did mine, I used;

Surfex HD to degrease. I did a little at a time with a toothbrush, and rinsed with a watering can.
Small wire brushes for all the aluminium, (engine block, intake manifold etc.).
AutoGlym Bumper Care for all the rubber and plastics.
Chemical Guys Jetseal109 for the rocker cover.
Autosol for the shiny aluminium, (strut brace, VTEC lettering etc.).
