Need help identifying an issue please

Post by Rich » Thu Aug 23, 2012 7:07 pm

I went for a fairly long drive yesterday for work and when I was almost at my destination and stopped at a junction, my car wouldn't go into gear. I pumped the clutch a few times and it went in but was a bit stiff for the next couple of gear changes then OK again.
Before I set off on my return journey I struggled to get it into 1st from stop and it happened again this morning and again after work today.

Will it be a clutch or gearbox problem?

To top off my woes, I discovered today that my gearbox is M2A4 not B4 as I thought. I should've checked more thoroughly before buying (i.e. wiped the sticker to reveal code) but I was too trusting of the seller :(

clutch issue, master or slave cylinder! pull back the slave cylinders foreskin to see if there is fluid in it, if there is: balls. if not climb on your head with a torch into the drivers foot well and follow the link from the clutch pedal to the bulk head, you should see the end of the master cylinder, if there is fluid there; double balls!

Thank you. I will take a look and fingers crossed I don't see fluids (I guess).

When you say balls, does that mean it will be costly to fix?

Not sure. I'd hazard a guess and say never :?

Slave cylinder went on mine a couple years ago. Clutch bite moved to the point where you couldn't get it into gear and that was it, pedal straight to the floor nothing else could be done.

Well I didn't see fluid there but what I did see was an empty upside down reservoir  I only forgot to secure it properly after I fitted the strutbrace

Chances are somethings knacked up inside now :(

Just top it back up with brake fluid and you should be right as rain. The clutch system is relatively simple, and not much to break!
