Judder? Any Ideas? - Seems to be sorted now

Post by Merlin » Mon Aug 27, 2012 3:13 pm

What causes driveshaft judder only when accelerating?

I replaced my drivers side with no problems. On getting the car back from the garage where they swapped my passenger over, my car now judders only under acceleration. Accelerating then taking my foot off the pedal = no judder.

The previous passenger driveshaft gave judder only over 60mph and under braking. With the new driveshaft braking judder is completley eliminated but this new judder is different to the types when I had my old shafts in place.

Any ideas?

Hmmm..... doing some reading and it might be the bearings in the intermediate shaft  The car is now going back into the garage on wednesday to try and get it sorted. I have my old driveshaft there to canabalise parts from.

*Post amended* It was the 'inner' n/s cv bearings that I replaced & they caused judder only under
acceleration.

Thanks guys. Vanzep I should be Ok as I have my old intermediate shaft here.

I did check the inner cup and bearings on the spider by counter rotating the shafts by hand when they were off the car, no play in these (a load of play in the old drivers side DS that I took off). I did not check the intermediate shaft bearing on the new passenger drivershaft, I just assumed it was OK .

Worth mentioning that Rich at PAW told me that sometimes there isn't a lot of play but the cv bearings
can still be shagged, as was the case with mine. Only way to check properly is to take them out of the
joint & inspect them.

I spoke to my garage and they said they couldnt stop the judder. They swaped over some bits and it made no real difference.

Anyone got any other ideas as to what may cause such bad judder? Steering seems fine to me :?

Also in addition to my steering being fine, gear change and clutch operation are A-OK. :?
