For Sale Section
May be a bit late in the day for this suggestion, but how about a minimum membership period? You have to be a forum member for at least 30 days or something?
It's based on info which is already coded. The post in for sale section button can just be put on a restirction similar to the following;
$timestamp = (now-30days);
if($register_date > $timestamp){
display code to show post button in for sale section;
}
3 or 4 lines of extra code and jobs a goodun. No spam posting, no paypal antics
EDIT: I can't type. Also, the above sytax isn't correct by if you want me to write a proper one let me know, I do these sort or restrictions with the systems I run in work

i cant see the problem! ok i can a little but its more the annoyance of people selling crap!
the way i see it is you wont complain if its a bargain! if you pay by paypal then you have a saftey net, if you do it correctly!, if you send as a gift then bigger fool you if its a buyer you dont know!
i have had a sale go wrong with ste (when he was new) and thought he was messing me about! hence why i dont sell expensive items to unknown buyers if they dont collect. turns out he was ok and genuine luckily for me! i have learnt. luckily he was a good guy this time!
i have had a purchase go wrong with a newish seller, i claimed the money back through paypal and i wasnt out of pocket!
buyer and SELLER beware! common sense should prevail!

Phil, I hear what you're saying.
My point though more centred around people abusing the site for their own gain, rather than existing member's being caught out - this AFAIK hasn't happened yet.
We are all on the site, we contribute to the community, we donate towards its running costs, then someone who's had a Prelude for a while but is now a rust bucket and they want rid just signs up to post an advert because they don't want to pay to advertise on Auto Trader or eBay. Is it too much to ask a small contribution to the site in return for the ability to post an advert, the sum of which will still be cheaper than using the above sites.
I also think the suggestion by Alex could be useful.

^^^^this if we are gonna do it just do it because it needs doing because if your saying you want to protect buyers/sellers you will end up making it to difficult to sell and people wont bother. I agree with a small donation to the forum

Main focus should be preventing people from signing up, immediately advertising stuff for sale then disappearing into the night.....
A calendar time delay from creating a profile to being able to create a post in the Parts or Cars for Sale sections sounds simple & plausible.
When I briefly had an ATR, the ATR forum charged ALL its members to advertise cars for sale (only a small amount but I agreed totally with the principal). This could all be above board & help towards admin fees
