That pc world one was £70 yesterday. Now £99.

Someone on DW said I should get a raid Nas thing attached to my router. All sounds a bit complicated to me.

The powered USB thing seems ok to me. Plug it in an move files across as and when I need it?

Yes. It acts just like an internal drive.

I still haven't sorted this.

What are people's thoughts on this? http://www.maplin.co.uk/2tb-seagate-hom ... ess-476983

I take it i can hard wire it to my pc that isn't wireless (or maybe plug it into the router?)

I can then back up my pc and then wirelessly i can back up my laptop, the kids pc & the kids laptop?

I take it i can then also (using the internet i guess) back up my stuff i need on my works pc, so i actually have an off site back up?

Help..

What are your goals? Something like this can live in a cupboard with your router (just connect them with an ethernet cable), and will be accessible over the network as a network drive. Generally you configure them through the web browser (much like you do with a router).

Is this something you need? Do you have many computers in the house you want to have access to these files? Accessing it from work may prove more difficult as you'll be at the mercy of the system administrators at your work as to whether or not you can mount a remote drive (I'd guess they won't let you). On top of that, you'd need to open the drive to the wider internet, something you may need to make sure you want to be doing.

I have all my documents etc. backed up to skydrive with hotmail. You get 25Gb free and you can install it on the PC so it basically looks like another disk drive you can access directly. Pretty neat.

I use mediafire for my music and pictures but I just noticed they put a storage limit on now, it used to be unlimited. I'm sure there are other free storage services out there that offer more space.

I have this at present -

Wired:

PC-----(ethernet)-----O2 Wireless Router/Modem)---------Telephone line

Wireless:

Laptop
Son's Laptop
Son's PC
iP4s
iPad
iPod
Xbox

Other:
PC at work (connected to internet) - i can always back up the work one on a flash drive and take it home. It is only word files etc, our main insurance operating system is all done remote from the hosts servers.

I like the idea of putting loads of music on there too, then when i play music via my iP4s downstairs through the stereo, i can hopefully pull if off the HDD via wireless rather than straight of my phones memory (provided of course the HDD works like that).

Is accessing it via my phone away from home any different to accessing it via another pc, such as my work one?

Yeah, any access from outside your home network will require you to allow access to the NAS from your router. I forgot you worked in a wee company though Shiny, you might be able to get your work PC mounting the drive after all if you set it up!

So do you think this will foot the bill for what i'm after?

Kind of back up for music/photos (from any of our devices) and the handy feature of being able to access it from any of the devices?

Is it possible to protect "folders" with a password?
