Prelude Vs 300ZX TT.... hmmm

Post by wchestnutt » Sun Sep 30, 2012 7:23 pm

Hello everyone,

Always loved the 300zx (1990+) and went for my first test drives yesterday. 500 mile round trip in the lude to test drive some 300s on my day off, ran into some pretty nice preludes and Integras on the way past London etc which was fun!

Anyway, on my test drives of the 300s I really couldn't tell much difference in power between them and the lude... Granted I was thrashing them as it was someone elses car, but still dropping it into 2nd at 4k and hitting the throttle I thought you would feel a fair amount of grunt but was pretty disappointed!.. Apparently the turbo lag is meant to be minimal but overall I came away disappointed as the 300 was always going to be my next car one day.

Any one driven the 300zx TT and have any thoughts? I think they are heavier than the Lude, but still 100 mote horses and (I think) 50 more torques I thought would have more effect. Still beautiful cars, and granted I didn't red line them but still.

All the best, William.

There's a guy that I think works at Lings that has one of these, it's always parked up out front whenever I drive past... nice looking but I can't say I know much else about them!

every car is different, 2 weeks ago i get chance drive customer's prelude and compared to one of mine stock it was something lazy with low power

same with few 300 what i drove before there was big differences in power.

i personaly will have one as if its good example its amazing car, just gearboxes need be sorted as that was big issue with them (overheating)

My mate had a twin turbo swb 300zx in black, stunning car....and it was fast as fook!! It had no mods other than a hks exhaust, drive a few before you make your mind up, sounds like the one you drove was a lemon.

Haha @ Nitin

I would agree they are bloody sexy... Maybe too sexy.

Thing is I drove two, both equally unadventurous. At what rmp does the boost really kick in??

Best, William.

Anyway, on my test drives of the 300s I really couldn't tell much difference in power between them and the lude....

Was it an auto, they are considerably slower than the manual. I had a considerably quick BB4 modded up before, then later on a Z32 TT manual, standard it was fast (cost 1.5k) - it didn't feel it, but the speedo told a different story, it was exactly as fast as my friends R34 GTT with exhaust/intake. Then spent about 400 on it, 2nd hand 3" kakimoto decats+single exit system, intake, JW ECU and boost jets to 17psi. It was utterly rapid. Then I removed about 150kg out of it.. It was sh*tting awesomely quick for the money. As it happens I came across a local lude which was on PUK years ago (left one, middle one is my old one) whilst it was in this state..

Toda everything and as much money as anybody would want to spend on an H22.

I thought I'd give it a wee blast from stop for a laugh and it was over by the start of second gear, because in 1st I ended up broadside nearly in the kerb  It was certainly a lively car, when sliding was very predictable compared to any 200/180sx I've had. Out of all the cars I've had I miss it the most. So mean and sexy, and the top-end pull is as capable as any supra.

You will NOT regret it if you get a decent one, yes they are a b*tch to work on, the looks dont suit everyone, they are a bit hairy at times, they use more fuel than the titanic, they sound a bit agricultural, the noisy worn prop bush will do your head in... but it is as close to supercar performance you can get for 1-2k if you hunt around. My current 330hp r33 skyline is nothing in comparison, but easier on fuel and more practical etc.
