Any science nerds on here? Degree related.

It's that time of year where everyone wishing to go to university has left all the UCAS cack til the last minute.

I've made a list of things I want to do, then I near enough halved it to what I could realistically be accepted to.

I think Merlin does something sciency or has a job to do with environmental sciences... talk to me

Basically I'm hoping some people on here have maybe done something Science related (pref. Bio or similar) and can tell me about it. Our UCAS guidance person is useless.

I started off doing Environmental Science but found it boring. In the end I graduated with and honors degree in Biotechnology. What are you looking to do? What sciences did you do at school or college? What do you find interesting as that is the most important part

Environmental Science was one I was looking at this morning

School, my science GCSE was a double award in Physics, Biology and Chemistry, then went on to A Levels but was on a completely different path back then so my A Levels are all art and design related. Now I'm back in college doing a BTEC Extended Diploma in Animal Management, currently in my second year and I've selected the science route so I'm doing Breed Development, Breeding and Genetics, Biomedical Science, Microbiology and an optional unit in Genetic Manipulation. Sort of broad but also lots to do with genetics

Trouble is I'm not altogether sure what interests me most. Molecular Biology & Genetics is the main course I'm looking at... but being quite specific I don't know if I want to go down that route and then like you said, get bored of it.

I don't know what I want to do. I started this course because I like animals and thought why not, but it turns out I don't really like animals that much

I like the insides of animals, how they go together and stuff, I'd much rather learn about DNA synthesis than touch a rabbit.

Stuff I've been looking at this morning: Biological Sciences, Ecology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Environmental Sciences, Natural Sciences, Microbiology, Pharmacology. Even though they're all bio related, they're all quite different

I did a bit of Environmental Science in 1st and 2nd year at uni. Was like a collision between Geography and Physics where only the boring bits survived

i found chemistry the most versatile, tought me to be methodical. if you find a subject facinating you will always get good results in an exam.

Yeah I found env science to be quite a bit of sampling & monitoring and the rest was "silent spring" this or that. IMO you have to look at the core of what each degree is. For example the Biological Sciences degree at my uni was almost identical to Biotechnology except it excluded fermentation technology (as fermentation is a biotechnological process when used in brewing etc...).

I think something with genetics is a good way to go as that will become a larger part of biology in the future.

Are you wanting to use your degree for a practical job like in a lab or in a theoretical suitaution like analytics?
