Some FAQ's on the M6HA (sport-shift) gearbox
UKDM 2.2 VTi 97-98 (BB8)
Utilises the H22a5 DOHC black top engine (compression 10:1) with the M2V5 5-speed transmission, capable of producing 183bhp & 151 lb/ft torque with a reported 0-60 time of 7.5 seconds, and top speed of 142 mph. The VTi has electronic 4 wheel steering, air conditioning, sunroof, and cruise control. The VTi uses a 5 stud wheel pattern in 5x114.3. UKDM 2.2 Vti 99-00 (BB8)
Utilises the H22a8 DOHC red top engine (compression 11:1) with the M2P4 close ratio 5-speed transmission, capable of producing 197bhp & 156 lb/ft torque with a reported 0-60 time of 6.9 seconds, and top speed of 142 mph.
Engine
The H22a8 comes from the factory with the dynamic chamber air intake (commonly referred to as the Type-S intake), and a 62mm throttle body in comparison with the H22a5’s 60mm. The H22a8 uses a different power steering pump to the H22a5, resulting in a slightly heavier feel to the steering. Other variations include the move from the 50mm mains crank seen on the h22a5 and earlier H22a’s and H22a2’s, to a 55mm crank. The H22a5 & H22a8 share the same P13 head, however the H22a8 shares the same more aggressive cams found in the Type-S and ATR H22a7.
Exhaust
The H22a8 uses a longer downpipe while the H22a5 has a shorter downpipe. The H22a8 uses a longer CAT (39.5cm) compared to the H22a5's 34.5cm . In addition, the H22a8 has fatter chrome exhaust tips than the H22a5.

Interior
There are a few differences besides the engine and gear box in comparison with the pre 99 VTi. The Post 99 features heated front seats and heated wing mirrors, the switch for the heated seats is located in the front door pockets next to the speakers, while the heated wing mirror switch in located in the switch panel on the drivers arm rest.
Summary of some of the difference between the H22a5 & H22a8:
- Air intake ducting/filter housing,
- Camshafts with increased lift,
- Catalytic converter is a larger size,
- Different pistons giving a higher compression ratio,
- Enlarged throttle body from 60 to 62 mm,
- Exhaust manifold / down pipe,
- Flexible pipe before the catalytic converter is shorter,
- Optimised ignition and injection timing,
- Valve seats readjusted from 60 to 45 degrees,
- Last but not least, the valve cover is red.
Common optional extras for the UKDM Preludes include:
The Motegi lip Kit
Motegi suspension (25mm lower than stock)
Motegi 17” wheels
UKDM front fog lights
PRELUDE chrome sill/kick plates
Leather seats in either black or cream.
Extra walnut trim form the centre console arm rest area.

JDM SI or XI BB5 & BB7 Versions
The JDM SI & XI both use engines stamped with the code F22B, despite the engines having a different output. The XI uses an SOHC F22B with a compression ratio of 8.8:1 that produces 135bhp, the XI was only available with 2 wheel steering (BB5). The SI uses a DOHC F22B with a compression ratio of 9.2:1 that produces 160bhp, the SI was available with either 2 wheel steering (BB5) or 4 wheel steering (BB7). The SI & XI both use a 4 stud wheel pattern in 4x114.3. JDM Preludes came with rear wind screen wipers, except for the Xi
JDM SIR BB8 & BB6 Versions
The SIR uses an H22 marked as the H22A, which has an engine compression ratio of 10.6:1 giving it 197BHP [stock tourqe figure unknown]. The SIR was available with either the M2S4 5 speed transmission or the M2T4 LSD 5 speed transmission. The SIR was available with either 4WS (BB8) or 2WS (BB6). The SIR uses the same engine as the 4th gen Si-Vtec. The air intake is the same as found on all 5th gen autos. Extras on the SIR include; power folding wing mirrors, digital climate control, cruise control, front fog lights, wind deflectors, acoustic feedback system, and rear window wiper.
SIR Extras:
JDM S-SPEC BB6
The S-PEC combines the 5-speed M2Z4 limited slip differential (LSD) manual transmission with the H22a engine (compression ratio 11.0:1) found in the popular Type-S, capable of a maximum power output of 217bhp and 162 lb/ft. The S-SPEC had full access to the entire SiR/Type-S options list, also a handful of sportshift S-SPECs were produced on a made to order basis.
For more info on the engine and exhaust system see the Type-S.
JDM Type-S BB6
The Type-S is commonly regarded as the pinacle of the Prelude range. The Type-S uses an H22a engine (compression ratio 11:1) and the M2U4 5 speed transmission to produce 217 bhp and 162 lb/ft. The Type-S featured Hondas ATTS (Active Torque Transfer System) that increases the power/torque to the outer wheel when cornering. The Type-S was only ever availibale with two wheel steering.
The standard interior trim of the Type-S includes suede/Alcanatara seats with Prelude lettering and red stitching, black leather with red sticking steering wheel and same on the gearknob, black carbon interior, and yellow dash needles.
The exterior of the Type-S inludes a flush mount rear spoiler, 16" 5 spoke alloy wheels, honeycomb grille, and the Type-S front lip.
Engine
The Type-S & S-PEC use the dynamic chamber intake and a 62mm throttle body, as used on the UK 99+. The Type-S & S-PEC H22a has a higher compression ratio of 11.0:1, 87.0 mm (3.4 in) bore x 90.7 mm (3.6 in) stroke, lift and duration were increased to 12.2 mm intake and 11.2 mm exhaust.
Exhaust
The Type-S & S-PEC have a 2.25” exhaust system in comparison with the 2.0” found on the other JDM Preludes. Further to this, the Type-S & S-PEC use a cylindrical exhaust manifold with a longer downpipe, the longer downpipe is to clear the ATTS unit on the Type-S. The catalytic converter is larger than other JDM Preludes.
