+1

My brother has an E92 330d (now with an angel tuning remap) 270BHP/enough torque to tow a house (more than an M3) & still does 40mpg!

Refinement is an absolute world apart from any current mainstream Honda too

I have a 320d e91 which makes a brilliant family wagon, but just not big enough for 3 kids. BMW's really are in a world of their own when it comes to engineering and refinement...

I have had 3 Scoobies now and all were bombproof. One of those would be my recommendation especially the Wagon.

But when it gets bad,
I take something for it.

More good suggestions guys.

Graham: Ok, I think I've ruled out the Alfa's searching around on reviews and forums. Saabs are out too, just don't like em. And Volvo 4x4? You kidding? I should have stipulated, no 4x4's or Autos! Hate big 4x4's with a passion, unless you live on a farm or you do off roading you do NOT need one for families and the bloomin school run!

Ammo: Too BIG an engine let's be honest. Plus I had looked at the newer 5 series estates like Greg recommended. Again all high mileage in my budget.

Shiny: YES! I spotted that last week and I love it! CL7 FTW. However it's over budget, plus alot of money for the car and still with a saloon boot. Uber rare though, would be cool to own one.

Phil: E55 Merc? Really? Too old, too big an engine, and AN AUTO!

Sailor: Legnum and Stagea - too old really. Also looked at all the other usual Jap motors but most are mid 90's to 2001.

Paul: Thanks for a real opinion, but you did look like a chav in it! :P
Nah, I really do like these for some reason, but maybe it's too much oomph?

However, I have found something different altogeher. Going to see a perfect example on Saturday, so will explain all then... :hurr:
