how do you mean? I have nothing to compare to so will get on with what I get but what should I be aware of?

The guys doing the competition are amazing (well, some of them) its scary just to watch them hurtle by firing off accurate arrows

Well the true Mongolian bows we have are actually very small, so they can be handled easily on horseback. The flight of the arrow is very whippy, by that I mean the tail end will go up and down quite a bit, whereas with a recurve you'd get a nice smooth flight path...in theory. Its ALL in theory! Get 'Zen and the art of archery', very good!
Don't let go of the string to release....just stop holding it LOL!!

very much like a trigger then. you dont pull a trigger you squeeze it.

I just had a go with the one i bought the missis for xmas (starter bow 35lb) and was getting 10 out of 12 in the target at 40 foot so im quite looking forward to having a go on a big one.

I have seen the proper mongolian bows. they are very whippy looking. they curve back on themselves more than you would think poss..

what lenth arrows should i be using benny?

That would depend entirely on your draw length, best to go to a reputable shop and get measured up as it were!

Here, just found this:

That's me destroying a polo at 70m with my recurve  ......with a Mongolian I'd be AMAZED if I got three anywhere near the boss!

Edit: The analogy they use is imagine you are holding a bucket of water - dont actively try to let go of the bucket just relax and stop holding the handle, it will do the rest, same as a bow string.

Yep, they sure will! - You may be holding quite a lot of poundage on your fingers too, especially with a long bow.
Mine is a modern recurve 'take-done' bow, so basically the style you saw at the Olympics. They are quite efficient, so mine is only about 38lb, but I shoot up to about 100m with it comfortably. A long bow would be nearer 70lb at a guess.
It's like playing the guitar, you're fingers will get used to it. Always worse in the cold weather!! Stings like a bitch.

Im looking at a pair of gloves for both the bow hand and string.

The bow's at the olympics were 8-) I think it was watching that that got us into the idea of doing it on horesback.

I fancy a bit of this:

go to 1:00 for skills

think i need to learn to ride first. lol...
