could it be ignition/spark, completely out causing it to sound bad?

maybe due to MSD thing, why would it have an external coil?

also check for vacum leaks

not really used or seen one before is that external coil?

i'm skeptical about it but could be unrelated,

like said valve clearance could be the noise

or worst case like you say could be internal damage

all belts tight?

forgot to mention it only pink's from 600-2000 RPM.. if i hold it at 2500 and give it full throttle there is no pinking

it is external yes.

ill check valve clearance, belts this afternoon

Is the engine management light on? Is the knock sensor there? H22a8's have a knock sensor like JDM ludes.

No engine check light, i was thinking if its pinking or piston slap the knock sensor would pick it up right. Unless its chuffed obv.

Knock sensor is on the oil pump on these right?

Ill do the valves now, see if it helps and ill retard the dizzy a touch..

it does have a small hole in the flexi pipe but surely that wouldn't make it pink !

The knock sensor is in a pig of a place. On the back of the block right under the intake manifold.

I had no idea what the MSD thing was so I googled it. From what I breifly read it doesnt sound a good system

MSD systems are quite commonplace on a lot of older engines, I had a 'similar' system on my old mustang, but I'm not sure why you would have it on lude TBH
