All this talk of switchblades reminds me of this classic "British" film...

Rubber catsuits, Eileen Daly, Vampires, Lesbians & Guns, what more could a man ask for...

I still like most of the Kurosawas. And for an old-fashioned laugh, how about M. Hulot's Holidays?

In more modern times, The Wave was good, and I quite liked Waltz With Bashir.

I watched this today, Dogtooth:

Alternate trailer:

Was pretty weird in places but a very interesting film, highly recommend it. The trailer doesn't really give you much of an idea what the film's about, but the IMDB summary is fairly accurate (although there's a lot more to it!) if you want to go read that.
Great movie, quite dark, but very interesting I thought. Concerning thought that something like this might happen or could be happening. There are some real nutters out there.

Foreign films?

How about anything made in Hollywood?

I get to watch my fair share of Hungarian movies. One of the classics is "Egri Csillagok" ("Stars of Eger"), about a small band of Hungarians defending the town of Eger from Turkish hordes, based on historical events. Has a similar feel to "El Cid".

Another good historical movie is "A Hidember" ("Bridge Man"), about Count Szechenyi and the building of the Szechenyi Bridge in Budapest. Big budget imperial-era stuff, although it does try to cram too much in so it helps if you have an awareness of that period in Hungarian history. Think the DVD has English subtitles.
