Sounds awfully like a lower pulley failure. If it was slightly loose before it may explain the noises too. Worth having a look and tightening it all back up? Could be as simple as that?

No, it's still intact; drive belts are all still on. But the lower pulley is wobbling & the power steering has stopped working. And the loud bang bang noise!

when it was just the noise the pulley did have a off centre slight wobble to it.
but when you rested your hand on the rocker cover above cylinders 1&2 you could feel them being struck from underneath
i would say if we stripped it now to look the 2 beltside bottom end shells would be lose. feels like the sheel bolts have worked their way out and are striking as the cam is turning
this i think has elonggated the cam nose and has now probally destroyed the woodruf key and the pulley has now streached the belt so the power steering is just slipping
don't think just doing it up will fix as god knows what metal warf is now floating around the block
