If you are (he is) happy with a refurbished laptop then it would be the best choice as you are going to manage to eek out some better components for the budget.

I've got a similar thread running on DW and a couple of chaps (who deal with HP) have said that the 620 sort of era which had issues was a long time back. One chap said that the Envy M6 is specc'd way above it's price and the best he's seen in a long time.
3 year HP warranty can be bought for £50 or £150 with full accidental damage cover, i'm kind of thinking that another £50 will offer good piece of mind.
Swaying back to HP now....
