Just so you know, the 3,500 kilo limit on a B licence is for the GVW plus MAM of the trailer, not the actual physical weight of the car, load and trailer. If your trailer doesn't have a plate denoting the MAM then you have to go by the tyre loads apparently.

One little loophole is that all B licence holders have a B+E provisional entitlement. So if you slap an L plate on the front of your tow vehicle and the rear of your trailer then provided you are accompanied by a driver with a B+E licence they have held over 3 years and are aged over 21 (plus any of the other requirements for a supervising driver, can't remember them all!) hen you can pull any trailer, laden or unladen, that you would be able to on a B+E licence (provided you keep to the weight restrictions of the tow vehicle of course). Your insurance needs to include cover for your provisional training though apparently. I think that's all you need though 8-)

Tbh though for the £4-500 an intensive course cost it might be worthy just doing one of them :)

As for a tow vehicle, I'd want the biggest thing I could get  this was part of the reason I bought my Bighorn ;)
Also, is it just me or are the laws regarding towing ridiculously complicated?? The government websites aren't much use either, each department seems to have its own interpretation

Yea all fair points chap. Tbh I think I will probably do my B+E licence early next year. I just don't want to get caught out at track with problems :? Think I may also go to my local trailer guys and have a chat with them about it. May be better to rent a trailer for the £40 a day, what with the amount I'm gna be doing it 5~6 a year maybe :?

Yeah, I know what you mean mate. B licences suck :( if I were renting something I'd be inclined to rent a 3.5 tonne recovery truck. It's more expensive than a trailer, but they're more stable so safer to use. Plus then it means you don't have to have a tow vehicle as your daily - the money you'd save running something small as a daily would probably offset the cost of the recovery truck :) owning a 4x4 is pretty good fun though, I love mine already

Your sums give you a towing vehicle that's the same weight as the trailer + load, give or take. I don't see this as a particularly stable combination. It'll be alright - unless something goes wrong. (A 1.5 tonne caravan flipped 1.5 tonne car on the M3 yesterday.)

If aiming to upgrade your licence early next year and you're going to do, say, 5 track days between now and then, it might be worth taking the hit and hiring a more suitable vehicle. Beavertails are available for about £100 a day I think.

I trailer mine around on my Brian James A series. Trailer is around 500k and my car is 1084k but this is stripped with a cage. Your average Lude weighs in at around 1150-1175 depending on what's on it. Most car trailers are about 500k.

One of the main things you have to consider is if the trailer is braked you wont be able to tow it regardless of weight, you need to have the relevant licence for that. You then need to work what will be a safe weight to tow with an un-braked trailer which is not the safest way. I've looked into this myself and I have to agree, the best way is to do the test and get whatever you like.

Just phoned a local towing training centre to me to get an idea of the cost.
Assessment £36
Training session 4hours £198
Recomended between 3-5 sessions depending on skill level
Test £115
They supply the vehicles for the training and test.

I tow with my renault trafic van 1.9. Not the quickest but capable. When towing the trailer inc. load should weigh less than 85% of the vehicle towing it. Otherwise you'll have tail wagging the dog syndrome.

Ha ha . Ok well i knew you lot would talk some sense into me  ;). Thanks to all that put a input into the situation. So the options would be then . . .

buy a big car/van/4x4 a daily, rent a trailer and do the relevant licence

rent a complete car recovery style truck (not sure what the situation on licence would be tho :? ) for the few times a year track days.
