When was the last time you had the brake fluid changed?
If it's old the boiling point may have dropped to a point where the heat from braking is causing it to boil (gas comprses = no/little braking)
Had this happen on an old Astra on a twisty back road with 5 up.
Most garages should be able to check the boiling point for very little (I think I paid £5 for it to be tested)

This happened in the old wagon I had.
A rear caliper had seized causing the fliud to boil up and my foot went to the floor, after a few pumps of the pedal the brakes returned. (crapped myself though as I was tanking it down the country A roads at the time)
So I pulled over at the nearest place (pub
) for an hour and let it cool. was enough for it to get me back home without problems
So check all your calipers and make sure none are seized on
