Need some info on my golf as the brakes are so bad it's dangerous, Seems it's a golf estate trait as our other one is terrible too

I know the clutch assembly behind the dash tension spring can break fly up into the dash or onto your shin depending on where it breaks. Does the brake/clutch have a shared hydraulic system? Is it mk4?

Is to the point i'm 2 foot braking, Initial brakes are poor then they fade to nothing.

Going to put new disks and pads on the front and new shoes on the rear, but if they can be upgraded I'd rather do that then waste money on OEM stuff or if there is anything else I can do to improve them before I end up in the back of someone!

yeah like Greg said I'm not sure if clutch and brakes share the same fluid though

Might be worth getting a Haynes manual, I have one for my Mk2 and it's pretty good for troubleshooting. I had a look at various VW forums but they all seemed to contain a lot of chavs

As for upgrades, might be worth finding out if the front calipers from a GTi or VR6 are a straight swap

On Mk2's most people with non GTi's who want better brakes just nab a GTi setup from the breakers.

MK3 Gti's or Vr6's are 5 stud so it opens up a can of worms

Id be looking at your servo for leaks, also the seal on the master cylinder might have gone because in theory if your brakes are fading to nothing it might not have a tight seal to displace the fluid. Is the brake warning light on the dash or not?
