The system is built in such a way that when it fails, the rear wheels are no longer 'held' by the motor. Instead the two big return springs pull against each other and make the wheels straight. At this point, your 4WS light comes on, and you are supposed to granny it to the nearest garage for repair.

Having driven my 4th with 4WS broken (was a dodgy ABS sensor) I have to say, I did not enjoy the experience. The back end was pretty damn twitchy above around 50mph - the weight of the car as it shifted overcoming the strength in the springs.

I suppose though, they don't really have corners in America - so would they actually notice?

I was going about 60 down an A road and took a corner without the 4ws working and the car crabbed. I nearly crapped myself and took it slow the rest of the way home

Mine had a bad earth and the light came on. You really could feel the difference when it wasn't working.
So fast driving was stopped till it was fixed, but Peachy on here took me for a drive in his 2.3 auto and was blasting the crap out of it,
With his not working! Scared the poop out of me :P

Blasting the crap out of it is an understatement Dbo ......... Damn thing never works and allways turns on and off. I have a new ecu, have reset it, pritty much done everthing i can do and it still faulty as f*ck and turns on. I just do not know what to do with it. Had problem after problem with this lude, and am really considering letting it go at present.

Did you manage to check what fault codes are stored?
