Heel & toe downshifting :D

Post by macky_6 » Wed Jan 16, 2013 7:47 pm

Hey all,

Decided that if I wanted to track the Lude then I had better learn how to heel & toe downshift. So I watched a few videos on Youtube over Xmas and I can now happily confirm that after 3 weeks of juddering, ahem, jerking and a few close calls to other road users, I can now heel & toe :D

I drive my car to work daily which I reckon helped me to master this a bit quicker! I also, always wear my driving shoes to work which are very slim & change into my work shoes when I get there

I did have to adapt my style slightly from the technique used in the videos I watched. I found the pedals in the Lude were a bit far apart for the most popular technique of "ball of foot/side of foot" and had to use more of a toe/heel approach. Anybody else found this?

Have to say I am quite chuffed at myself

Interested to hear if you guys are using this driving style? :D

Serious question, if you will be driving on the track do you have to heel toe? Can't you just change gears normally. :s

you need an adjustable pedal box and racing seat not gonna happen in a road car but if you had a track car you could make it work

I heel and toe all the time I'm driving either the lude before I got rid of it and now the s2k. Tried it in my lorry and nearly went through the windscreen lol.
The technique I use is just rolling my foot over and the bit just below my laces presses the throttle I think. It is a lot of fun lol. And Nitin you would do it on a track because it balances the car and allows you to shift down smoothly whilst breaking.

Only time I get close is if I try it like Edd.

I am fairly miniature though, if anything I think bigger shoes would make it easier for me

Yep. I heel and toe as part of my driving, I started for fun years ago but its just habit now really.
I found the same as you re the pedals, so it's very much actual 'heel and toe' - I swing my heel out about 45 degrees to blip the throttle.
