well after 3 failed attemps i can confirm that vtec does not work in reverse in a jdm auto but the rev limiter does.
just dicovered that vtec doesnt work in forward either and i have a missfire .
so having cured this slight problem we tried again i say we as this time i had a clock watcher and sure enough at what was just past 5,000 rpm i felt the strange reverse kick and heard the note change as the vtec kicked in and boosh .

vtec works in reverse FACT. :D

i was hoping the vss would work backwards to, it is just a magnet and coil. so we have confirmed 3 things here,
1 your a nutter
2 it isnt gay
3 if vss still functions as normal then it should be possible in both manual and auto (and it is possible to hiy vtec in reverse
8-)
did you manage to start the silver car yet, if not then i will let you build me this instead

cheers guys im gonna do another pointless exercise tomorrow and find out how fast it will go in reverse, the road my garage is in leads to a small industrial estate but is dead straight and about half a mile ? long . theres a scout hut about 2/3 the way down and there were cars parked on the road outside it.
being a narrowish road i didnt fancy having to go past them backwards at silly speeds or worse still into them so will leave it til no scouts night ;)

your lucky justin i havent started the silver car so the black 1 it is then
