I learnt tricks on dry slope, with rails that are over 5ft off the ground, and a quarter pipe that's 8ft tall. If you learn on dry slope, when you get on snow, it's all easy really :D Doesn't hurt quite as much on snow so a lot of fear is gone just cos of that.

almost anyone can get on skis and be happily going down a blue run by the end of the day, so yeah, skis are the easiest way for a beginner to get out on the snow and get around the mountain.
i found snowboarding much harder for the first couple days, then once you get it, i found it's much easier to progress. i really found i got stuck in a rut with skiing. you know, you get the parallel turns down, then not alot happens after that!
i've done 7 seasons, snowboarding was much more fun in the long run.
yeah, powder is where the real fun is though, that's why i'm spending a quarter of my years wages on going to Alaska this winter for 2 weeks heliboarding. so excited!

After a few goes on my local dry slope I went with a couple of mates to Mayrhofen, Austria for 10 days (Great place to learn by the way). Easily the best holiday I've ever been on! The sun was out and it was so much easier to learn on snow! And by the end of the week we were flying down with just t-shirts on (and trousers and boots as well of course). Never had such an adrenaline rush as that :D

We spent most of our time off piste as well. That was so much fun! :D I've been wanting to go again ever since, but only been again once with my family to Italy one Christmas, which just isn't the same as with mates

You can't be getting out on the snow! It's awesome! I convinced the Mrs to come with me this year for the first time and she loved it, so I got myself a skiing buddy now :D

With skiing, I know what you mean about the rut but it's so worth it when you get past that. Pleanty of boarders can board goofy / regular to jumps and stuff not many skiers can, myself being one fo the few.

It's taken 14 yrs of skiing to get to that point  but I can ski backwards down red runs, I'm onto to jumps & tricks, and helicopter spins are far to much fun! Also, what do you do when your on a board with a flat run to the bottom of a lift?
