Watch friends and youtube video's. I new sod all 8 years ago, but can do most things on a car now. Most general things like servicing and changing discs/ pads are a piece of cake.

... Or would make you a rather attractive in the eyes of those men and boys in your case Sandvetrox wrote:But dammit, it seperates the men from the boys!!!!

I'd go by all the advise so far, and everything vetrox says sounds all too familiar

The one other thing I've learnt though (And this isn't always an option for everyone), is it's a major help to have a second car

Re: Beginning mechanic
Yes I am definitely turning toward a second car but not too sure about a couple of things:
1- need to convince the other half first
2- do I need to have that second one insured and taxed if it is on the road?

You will need insurance for it too
just to highlight how you can be experienced and still balls up. I went to do my coilovers yesterday and rounded off a top mount nut. Another reason for me to invest in a proper 6sided socket set instead of these multi points.
The old me would have given in, sobbed and paid a garage to sort it. The modern me invested in a dremel long ago so I promptly made that nut my bitch!
Moral of the story? Get some 6point sockets and deffo get a dremel that thing has paid for itself many times over and it helped me cut up some copper pipe when I was doing some household plumbing
