been out this morning looking at the damage
and it seems like its good news :D
pulley bolt had just worked loose but the pulley was still sitting in place on the woodruff key so i undid by hand and took the pulley off - only problem is the woodruff key is still in the crank but thats nothing to worry about. pulley itself is still in servicable condition but i will prob get a new one just to be sure. Took rocker cover and upper cam cover off and all is fine no probs with timing belt or anything else that i can see :)
if i wanted to chance it i could probably just bolt it all back together.....
will post up some pics later on and get some feedback from you guys before i order any parts.

That's brilliant news! :D

Examine the pulley very carefully, and see if there's any wear on the spline or if there are any hairline cracks anywhere. If there isn't then you're probably good to re-use it.

Just check the threads on the crankshaft before you put it all back together. make sure there's no swarf and use a new bolt and washer ;-)

Awesome news bud :D

I had the same thing happen, pulley went "oops!" and decided to leave. Wasn't in the best spot, almost a single lane due to traffic, no curb to pull up on and a bus behind me lol. Managed to limp round a bit further in to a layby.

Ive looked at the inner grooves on the pulley(like Nathan suggested) that lock into the crankshaft and they do look pretty worn down so im looking at getting a new pulley for starters - will need to inspect the grooves on the end of the crankshaft to see how they look.
Prob going for lightweight pulley - there are a couple of them out there - the really cheap un at £26 or the japspeed one at £60.
Ive read up on poss damage caused by pulley coming loose and i want to carry out a few checks tomorrow - something about timing marks all lining up - Does anyone know what other checks i could carry out to check condition of the crankshaft before i spend any money on new parts?
Any help would be appreciated as always.

What are those marks on your timing belt Nick? Are they anything to be concerned about? I'm assuming you haven't been able to turn the engine over to inspect the entire thing? Definitely worth doing before you fire her up again.

Just marks from where ive brushed it with the rocker cover when taking it off so should be ok
Is it safe to start the car with no pulley fitted? or am i going to have to fit a new pulley and belts first?
I will take a few pics of the timing marks on the cam gears/pulleys so i can check if the timing is out.
Anything else i should be looking at?
