It's been a while since I haven't used a smilie to advertise the fact, but I always think they make a certain kind of statement loose something. I used to get in trouble with some members as they quite often took me a little too seriously, so I had to start using.

... But it's nice to be elusive now and again

No, you're right: it's much like using exclamation marks when you've written something ordinary.
