Advice needed :)

Post by chris1811 » Wed Jun 17, 2015 10:32 pm

Hi guys,

I currently own a 1991 Toyota Mr2 mk2 2.0 GT and today a gent came up to me asking if I fancied swopping my Mr2 for his 1993 Honda Prelude i 2.2 auto.

Both cars similar age, mileage, condition etc etc.

Now I know nothing about Ludes other than I love the look of them. I am tempted by this swop but really don't know if i should or not.

What are you thoughts guys being the Lude masters?? :)

Cheers in advance

Tbh, if it was me, and I expect others may disagree but I'd stay away from the auto, which will dull the vtec experience imho...

But having said that I've never driven an auto vtec, but from experience autos give a bit less than the manual version of the same car, this is just my prejudiced view mind you, as I've never much liked autos, as you get a dulled driving experience in my view, but I'm sure others will be along shortly to completely dispel this prejudice I hold

Only one way to find out if it's for you... Why not ask to take it for a spin? ;)

There is an issue that you'll potentially get hooked though :? God only knows how many members on here sell up to try something else, only to regret it and then buy another Prelude

So I may as well welcome you to the club right now ;)

Haha I'm not a massive fan of autos either but generally I'm not fussed. I need a bigger car. I'm told it has a 4WS system whatever the hell that is? Lol

I've heard vtecs can be problematic but in general the engines are solid :)

I was hooked the day I drove passed one on the motorway haha

4WS = 4 Wheel steer. Makes parking a doddle as at slow speeds the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction. That can be problematic, but it's generally down to the ECU and they're not terribly expensive second hand.

Vtec isn't problematic though, unless the car really hasn't be well maintained. It's only a joy 8)

Its not the Vtec that you needs to concern you , its the 4WS which can be a PITA, if it goes wrong, I got shot of mine and converted to 2WS because I couldn't fix it after 6 trys....

Don't let that put you off, the vtec Prelude is a f****** awesome bit of kit, I've had 4 vtec engine cars over the last 12 years, with other cars in between and the Prelude vtec even more so than the S2000 I had briefly it just is a really pure piece of driving experience unlike anything else I've owned

I should have added that Honda have "never" had a failure with a vtec engine, that speaks volumes for the engine.

I'm assuming this one is a vtec. Need to drive it really and see what it's like. And guessing RWD but I'm probably wrong haha (Told you I know nothing)

Anyone else got any comments on the automatic part?

Cheers that cleared up the 4WS. Not bothered whether it works or not :) my Mr2 has no power steering anyway lol

Yes, no RWD I'm afraid ;)

You need the 4WS to be working. If it's not (If the "4WS" dash light it permanently on), then it's dangerous as there's nothing controlling the turning of the rear wheels. They can turn on their own when you go around a corner or something, or even on a straight and throw you off the road.

This made me chuckle. How easy is it to have deactivated?
