New MOT Cat regs.. BB4's exempt?

Post by bb1boy » Mon Jun 24, 2013 1:50 pm

Hi guys, I've been reading up on this new catalytic convertor rule for the MOT test ..and I THINK I've found a loophole for BB4 owners..

NEW RULES <-- please have a look and see what you think, but it looks as though cars NOT in the annexe (page 15 onwards) do not require a cat (although the emissions still have to be under required levels) so anyway, BB1s and BB8s are listed, but no BB4s. What do people think about this?

Because I run LPG, my car passed its last MOT emissions test without the need for a cat, but under the new rules I'm not sure if I need to fit a one for next time or not! ...obviously I'm hoping not.

How do others decipher this?

Cheers!

It was a case that if it's after July 95 even a BB4 needs a CAT...

Your car is not listed as needing the extended test as it is not given at the back of the booklet (pdf you linked to) so it will be a non cat test. 3.5% CO and 1200ppm HC are the limits as far as I can remember

My BB4 didn't need a cat to pass MOT as BB4 isn't on the system and any car not on the system goes through the non cat test

You have to make sure that they do that though else they just select Prelude and it goes trough the cat test

Ok, so I need to check my V5 to see if my date of first use is before August 1995 and if so, it's a non-cat test for me?! That is brilliant news! Thanks guys :)

He be wrong.

Seems pretty clear cut to me:
Service Exhaust Emission Standards for Road Vehicles - Page 5 wrote: The test applies to:

Passenger cars (1) first used on or after 1 August 1992 and mentioned in the
Annex to this publication
.

All passenger cars first used on or after 1 August 1995.(2)

Other vehicles, such as large passenger cars and light goods vehicles (3), first
used on or after 1 August 1994 and mentioned in the Annex to this
publication.
The BB4 is not mentioned in the Annex so any BB4 registered before the 1 August 1995 is still exempt.

Not sure on that one. Since it asks in your link: "Can you find an exact match in the analyser database or in the in service emissions book", if you look at the link on the first post the BB4 is not there. These are:

2.0l Coupé Serial Code BB3
2.2l Coupé VTEC Serial Code BB1
2.3l Coupé Serial Code BB2
2.0l Coupé Serial Code BB9
2.2l Coupé VTEC Serial Code BB8
