Phil: Sorry no Hiro stuff - I only do Mugen!

Nafe: Showoff with your 74mm opening. Mine tapers out a bit, not measured it yet. Still an improvement before it gets to my charger! :P

All: Thought most would like the Mugen pick ups. I really need to scan in all my Mugen brochures I have, I've said I'd do it for a while now. I have tons of them, this was just the most recent and rare. Let's see what I can sort out over the next few weeks. 8)

More updates coming this week!

BUILD PART 4) - Parts (Cont'd) – Wheels

BUILD PART 4) - Parts (Cont'd) – Wheels

Wheels!

Yes I still have the Volk split rims and yes they are painstakingly still being refurbed as and when I can find time. I am on the last wheel’s worth of bolts to clean and polish, I have had all the wheel centres stripped, mostly done by Sam on LB (Thanks bud) using his blasters in work. Which are currently looking like this:

I now have a place lined up to powder coat them, but am waiting until after Japfest when funds permit. What choice of colour have I decided?
I’m not sure I even know any more – pics soon! (One day!)

As for the rims, this has been the hardest part to progress with as the pitting around the bolt holes takes a while to knock down ready to polish up. I am losing the will will this part, wish I’d paid someone to do it now. Plus I am thinking the ongoing maintenance of keeping them polished with UK weather, especially around all the bolts is going to be interesting – it’s not just one flat surface! :(
We shall see…
Another more costly option is to have them chrome dipped to give a more resilient finish. This could be the answer depending on costs.

Last year, I felt the need to get the large Hi-Spec brakes on and the Volks were really holding me up. The current 16” OZ’s are too small. Sooooo…..

Last year, I bought another set of wheels! :D

I know, I’m a knightmare!

Unsure exactly what they were when I bought them, and condition, etc. Just that they were 17’s and looked very smart and potentially proper split rims. Piccies:

Some of you may recognise them from a guy on LB who broke his lude a while ago.

They do not have the original centre caps and the guy I bought them off had the ones fitted, machined by a friend. They’re not perfect and the polished against the painted silver isn’t 100% but they still looked very nice.
They have a Modena racing sticker on the insides, but I can’t find any more info than that that through my Google searching. I have found a couple of pics of the same wheel but not a definitive name of the wheel – some have referred to it as a Works wheel, very respectable JDM brand name – but I’m doubtful:

I also found another style of wheel Modena did, which replicates the Ferrari F40 style of wheel:

Very cool retro wheel.

The wheels turned out to be a three piece design. But the worst part of the wheels is there sizes:

Front: 17 x 8J – not a problem, same as my Volks
Rear: 17 x 9J!!! Pretty F’ing huge

So I spent a day with my host of wheels and test fitting my Hi-Spec brakes to check clearances:

Image

Image

All looking yummy indeed! 8)
Unfortunately my newly acquired wheels were the worse fitting for clearing my new brakes – who would have thought! They fouled the calliper front and the through bolts and the very top of the calliper against the 90 degree valves. Bum deal indeed! :(

Next up I tried the 16” OZ Super Turismos just for a laugh, but they were fairly close to fitting. Some 15mm+ spacers may have sorted them out. But I don’t want to run those.

Image

Last up was a mocked up Volk wheel – damn they look tasty just shot blasted! 8)
Most of the rim is covered with duct tape to protect the already polished (to a point) outer rim while I use a sander to knock down the inner bolt parts.
They actually fit the best of the three, but the thick spokes of the wheels foul the calliper through bolts ever so slightly. A small 5-6mm spacer should be all I need to clear them – so they’re on the list to buy now when the refurb is finished.

So my new wheels were kind of redundant, which is annoying as I really love the look of them on my car. Eventually another buyer came along and they’ve found a new home for a 5th gen on here – hope you enjoy them bud!

Since then, I had planned to hold off fitting the Hi-Specs once I found some nice wheels (and cheap enough!). So…

Roll onto a few weeks ago and I happened upon some new wheels on ebay, the seller of which lived just down the road from my work. One lunchtime and £150 later and I am the proud owner of some Antera 301’s – a 5 spoke curvy dished wheel in size 17 x 7.5” ET40. The seller used to run a bodyshop and refurb old wheels on the side. He had a few sets of old stock left over to sell as part of the close of the business. These were finished in a mild metallic black, and are well…immaculate and look brand new! 8)

Here they are:

Image

Ammo will recognise these.
A real well-made Italian wheel!

I trial fitted them seeing as my old OZ wheels have been removed and onto pastures new – enjoy them Ste (Bristol_bb4):

I need to throw the Hi-Specs back on to test the clearances, but the design of the spokes looks like there is more than enough room now. 8)

I also bought some Tegiwa Alloy red nuts for the new wheels:

Image

Image

While I like the moodiness of the black wheels, it needed something to break it up from the black of the tyres. I thought I’d try and add a red vinyl strip to the rim. They sell these for motorcycle wheels in various sizes. One 17” set ordered and this was the result:

It looks pretty good for the sake of £4, however the tape ends aren’t 100% the same width so to get it half decent as a continuous red line, I had to overlap the vinyl. This doesn’t look the best up close, but for the money and for a ‘spare’ set of wheels it’s worth it.

Now I just need to get the spare tyres I took of my Volks put on (2 x Falken 912’s & 2 Budget Toyo copies), some new valves and balanced and I can throw them back on the car. I’m hoping this week some time. Wahoo!

That’s it for the wheels so far. I’ll update in the future how I get on with the Volks.

Cheers,

Rob

Definitely glad the Volks fit the best of all of them. Wasn't sure about the Modena's... Not with those centre caps anyway ;-)
