H22A8 build - Collection day! :-D
Had the most agonising wait over the weekend
- knowing my car was ready but couldn't get down there until today.
Anyway, it was great to pull up and see the lude again, a few weeks away is always a sure fire way to make you appreciate something.
Had a good chat with Rich about the all work he'd carried out, which has been mentioned in the thread obviously but here's a summary:
Completely rebuild and fit H22A8
Mild head work - some port blending and smoothing and a skim.
Fit KS balance shaft delete kit
Fit ATR intake manifold
Fit P28 ecu (with Hondata S300)
Fit Solid fabrications exhaust manifold and downpipe.
Remove the resonator
Tune 'er up!
Well things of note: The mani and downpipe required Rich to notch the subframe and front engine mount, and the O2 sensor location had to be changed.
This isn't a fault as such, I think that the jig used by Alan at SolidFabs was probably with an ATR in mind, where this would not have been an issue. Anyway, nothing toooooooo major, just worth noting if you are looking at something similar.
Here's some pics to show what I mean:

After a chat, Rich presented me with this:

244bhp and 172.9lbft
Really happy with that obviously!, but started to worry that they had turned it into a Prius..... - check out the practically linear power! There's actually a bigger jump higher up than at the crossover (which is at 3,800 btw).
Rich reckons this may be down to the design of the manifold?
After the inevitable wallet beating, I was handed the keys (rather reluctantly I might add
) and off I went, into the sunset......as such.
So, what's it like?......
I'm no mechanic or writer so I'm probably going to have trouble putting this in to words, but I'll do my best.
First chance I got to open her up was to overtake a lorry. Textbook scenario; long slow lorry, long straight road, clear view off into the distance.
I was doing about 40mph, dropped to 2nd, catching the revs with a blip of the throttle.....
Hoe.
Lee.
Sh1t.
I did honestly and truly LOL.
First off, there's the noise! - instead of the 'razz' of the previous engine, there's a real growl to the sound, it sounds MUCH beefier, but with a little rally-type rasp too and the power delivery is one huge surge. My Dad was following behind and said it just took off, he was like
Rich warned me that it was deceptively fast, and he really wasn't kidding. After a very quick second and third, a glance down led me to, ahem, reduce speed slightly.
The power comes in from low down too, it's almost as though it has a bigger displacement, the pull is just that much stronger. I reckon if someone not-in-the-know was to drive it, they'd guess it had a 3litre up front!
First gear is noticably sharper and quicker than before, and when you flick into second, it just hooks up again so quickly. Rolling downshifts, wow. - at one point on the way home, a caravan in front of me started to wobble, then wobble more...then MORE
, then they started to brake and it obviously got worse! I dropped from 5th to 3rd and put my boot down to get out of the way of any impending doom a bit sharpish, and we just effortlessly wafted past. The caravan-tower actually slowed right down and all was well BTW
How can I sum up. Well, it's early days for me, or day even. But already it just feels as though this is how the Prelude should have always been. It's docile and still comfortable to drive, but when you need it, there's a tiger under the bonnet. It really does feel like a powerful GT car to me now, just ample grunt when it's needed.
To anyone considering this, I think you already know what I would tell you.
No, it's not 'cheap' to do, but to me its about what the car is worth TO YOU. I would have spent more if I had changed the car and I wouldn't have ended up with something that can do this to be quite honest.
I don't want to get all gushy-Oscars-acceptance-speech on you all
, but I really cant thank PAW and obviously Rich in particular enough. I am SOOOO chuffed with the results, it's been like collecting a brand new car, and then some. They are a rare breed of garage - trustworthy, genuine perfectionists, who are bloody good at what they do...I think they may even enjoy it!
Well I realise I'm starting to rival the great Nuc for post length
, so I'll bugger off.
I will get some more pics up of the car in due course, it just needs a good wash and wax.
TaTa,
B

Thats fantastic figures and bummingness of PAW.
My Type S is off to PAW soon and at the moment i will be happy with Stock 217bhp and my engine is basically the same and i plan to basically the same mods as above bar the ECU for my ATTS. So good to know 240 is a good value especially with mine only have 40k on it.

Nice numbers there
I was just looking at your torque curve and comparing it to mine from PAW

You've got an awesome high end torque setup there, I wish I had 11:1 pistons in mine
You taking her to LLL's next month?

Awesome!
Nice little write up – impressed with the word count obviously.

Interesting to have to see another subframe having to be notched, I need to go in a little more than that pressed edge, should be interesting!
Good little write up of the new power under the bonnet mate, I won’t deny that I’m a little jealous that you’re that much further down the road and have picked the car up from Rich – I can’t wait for that day. He really is quality at what he does. The power he’s extracted out of yours is suberb.
I bet you’re glad that caravan regained control too! I would have bricked it having just spent all that money on my lude!
Have to check it out in the flesh some time. No doubt I’ll be in the queue of others who want a quick spin in it.
Cheers,
Rob
