New Wheels and 5 Bolt Hub Conversion Bits

Post by NafemanNathan » Thu Jan 10, 2013 12:15 am

Well it was a difficult decision but I finally decided to sell my SA3R's :( I figured they were going to be more of a show wheel than a track wheel and I've already got too many sets of wheels floating about to warrant having a set of each at the moment. Also although doable (Phil), it was going to be a lot easier to make my front Brembo conversion work if I had at least 17" wheels. As it stands I was going to make them work with standard diameter 282mm discs, but really I want bigger

And now what with my new arch extensions and the desire to cut my arches out and do the job properly, I can go for wider rims too. Where as the SA3Rs were 16x7J et35 & 16x8J et38 I was now looking for 17x9/9.5 et12 ish 8) Rota do 17x9J et12 Grid Drifts which is what I was keen on, but that particular spec was only available in the USA and shipping to the UK was going to be a bitch. The other alternative was to go for a 5-bolt hub conversion and then get the same spec'd wheels but 5x114.3 PCD which were available in the UK.

So, Secia came to my aid and sorted me out with this lot...

Image

You'll have to take my word that they all have 5 studs ;-) Front knuckles with hubs and rear hubs. Cheers Secia :D

The pic makes them look rougher than they are, but everything is going to get blasted, treated and powder-coated anyway. I still potentially have to do some fabrication work on the front knuckles to get my Brembos to fit as well.

So with those in hand, next was to sort out wheels. It was either between Rota Grid Drifts, Torque Drifts or GTR Drifts. I usually like to stay away from Rotas as I prefer originals, but they did exactly the size/spec wheels I wanted and more importantly they were affordable. At 9" wide with an offset of +12 the rim was going to sit further in the arch by 4.75mm compared to my OZs which are practically OEM width and offset, so I'll have no rubbing issues there, and then they'll protrude a further 58.75mm past the OZ's externally, which will work perfect with my 65mm wide arch extensions. So I got on to Scott at H-Tune knowing he is a Rota dealer, meanwhile I was checking out ebay, Wheel-Whores (Shockingly bad site btw) and Driftworks. There was quite a few 18" Rotas floating about which I toyed with the idea of, but I still wanted a reasonable sized tyre sidewall, so that would have meant a larger rolling circumference, thrown my speedo out, but my biggest concern was that it would heighten the potential for rubbing issues.

Anyway, I digress, I spotted some rims on Driftworks, they were 17x9J et15, but they were in Chrome (I don't like chrome). I contacted the guy anyway, but then also searched for the rims on Google as I'd never heard of them before. It turned out they were a discontinued JDM rim and were replicas of Skyline R34 rims 8) They're also very rare now and quite sort after in the Nissan Drift scene. And I was in luck!... Google also uncovered a current ebay auction for a set and they were in white. Admittedly they were in dire need of refurbishing, but at the starting price they were a potential bargain and I wanted to powder-coat them black anyway. I contacted the guy asking for some better pictures and I then cheekily asked for a Buy It Now price. He sent the pictures and asked for just an extra £25 more than the starting bid  So of course I bit his hand off!... And they arrived today :D ...

This is the first one and this is also the worst bit of kerbing out of all of them, so not bad at all :) ...

Image

To give you an idea of how wide they are with 225/45 tyres...

Two, with centre cap (There are only two, but I don't really like them anyway)...

Three, with the second of two centre caps and good job I wasn't counting on using the tyres  ...

Four...

And a comparison of the stack against the SA3R stack lol...

Glad I discovered these... I like them a lot! :D

Great Company Grenade GX-01 Rims

I also had a rebuild kit for my Brembos arrived today, so of course there's a picture of that too...

Very nice choice, I like those alot.

Can't wait to see all you guys fit these 9J wheels.

What colour are you going to get them recoated in? I assume not white. Or is it a big secret? :hurr:

Cheers guys.

Not a secret, just undecided. It'll either be the 30% matt black again (like my OZs) or maybe just a very dark grey.

My wheel arches will be one of the first jobs as soon as I've got my temporary garage (Once my pain-in-the-ass-planning is past and I've got the foundations down) and I've taught myself to weld properly ;-)

New Rear Calipers and a New Plan.

Post by NafemanNathan » Thu Jan 24, 2013 9:49 pm

With my new rims acquired to frame my future front Brembo conversion and give me a wider broken suspension look, I thought the standard rear calipers are going to look pretty pitiful in there, and if I also end up going for a larger than standard rolling circumference (which I am considering), then they're also not necessarily going to be that effective anymore either.

Cue Froidas and his for sale thread ;-) ...

And then today I had these arrive in the post :) ...

Image

They also have NSX written on them! ...

Image

Image

Turns out they come from a car (We'll call it an "NSX") with 42/58 front to rear weight distribution, which coincidentally is the complete opposite of a 4th gen Prelude! Because an NSX has more weight at the rear (due to being rear engined... What's that about?!) it means the bias for the rear brakes is relatively high in comparison. So with Brembo 4 pots on the front and these on the rear it looks like I'm certainly going to need an adjustable bias valve plumbed in, so I can tune it to make sure I don't end up constantly locking up one end of wheels.

It also turns out an NSX runs 282 x 22mm vented rear brake discs, which again coincidentally a 4th gen Prelude runs at the front (+1mm on the width). So I could potentially run standard Prelude front discs on the rear! (Are 5th gen front discs exactly the same as 4th gen, but 5x114.3?).

(EDIT: Also just find out the two rear calipers together retail at £1912.04 :o )

Also following news that my Daily Prelude is dead :( there is a new plan! :D... To help speed up this slow ass build I will eventually be transplating everything across to the Silver chassis, once it's been fully stripped and had full track preparation in my new garage. This will however happen after I've got the Red one up and running again, but means I don't need to spend anymore time on track prepping the red one (apart from cutting the arches out). I'll also be removing all the suspension components from the silver one to powder-coat and polybush to help speed up the swap and make it easier.

Nearly have all the big bits I need to complete the build now. Just missing the full exhaust system (though I know what I want for that), Cams and valve train (Which will be a mixture of Skunk2 and Supertech), uprated ARBs and clutch. By the time I can afford these bits I should have had my temporary garage long enough to have everything else fitted and be ready for them ;-)

To answer your disc question, yes Nafe.

Wanted these hard to go with my NSX fronts... but on second thoughts running the same size brakes front (well nearly, 282x28 on the front) and back would be silly..?
