How to: Repair your 4th gen Cup Holder

Post by NafemanNathan » Tue Jan 31, 2012 12:59 pm

Taken from Suff's thread on LB, but I feel I'm entitled as I showed him how to do it in the first place ;-)

... If you've got a gen 4 facelift model, chances are your cupholder stays open and won't clip shut.
chances are you've also tried without success to find a working one.

well, here's how (in most cases) to fix it. (Thanks to Nathan for showing me how to do this in the first place.)

1: Pull out cupholder (just pulls upwards)
this is what most of you will see on the side....

2) this little pin is what you need to fix it.
Image
I made mine from a piece of paperclip, any strong wire will do as long as its thin enough to go into the groove on the cupholder. its approx 2cm long, with the ends around 3-4mm
3)remove the screw and clip
Image

4)place piece of wire from the hole just above the screw hole and into the groove.
Image
(at this point, pick up cup holder, holding pin in place with thumb and check the operation, it should slide around the left section of groove on closing and right side on opening, if not adjust the proportions of the pin until it does)

5) now put the clip and screw back, the new pin should be visible through the slot in the clip

6) Close lid on cup holder.

7) Cheer.

Quick side note to this one guys, if your wire is missing you can still fix the cup holder, thick piano wire works well, takes a bit of tinkering to get the exact measurement or just an accurate ruler of some kind, bend it into a staple shape and hey presto! Works better if you either try to cut the ends flat or sand/file them flat ;)

i imagine more people have a paper clip to hand than piano wire ;-)

Mine broke at some point, but when I removed the center consoles I found TWO pins lying on the ground! Must have broken in the past and been fixed. No idea where the spare one is now though.

Finally got round to doing this as it was driving me I sane not being able to clese the damn thing. Took two attempts to get it right. First one seemed really flimsy and was never gonna hold, second time I made it a bit sturdier and done works a treat.

Thanks
