 If it's in safety mode it should remain in it until you sort the issue and reset the ecu. The light might not be coming on straight away though as if it is O2 related, it will be analysing it after running for a while each time... I think.

I get this with my 4th gen as well (knock seonsor CEL). I assume that the ECU is running on a set map as the engine is warming up. Once warmed up the ECU looks to all the sensors and then reports a fault, hence the light coming on then an not straight away.
It will normally come on if you go over 3.5K rev's and as said puts you into limp mode

Dodgy dizzy will also give you strange results, mine caused random hesitation and loss of power

It's passed the emissions side of things, just a sticking caliper to fix.

The mot guy didn't even notice it but on the way home it feels worse, like its being strangled. I'll try working on it tonight but gotta get my tools first.

It was tested as a 94 so that with the cat.

I haven't touched it yet, may have time tomorrow but taking a type s onto the rolling road.

I never really drove this engine I fitted but I did test the gearbox with wheels off the ground. Lets just say it would hit 150 in seconds, and now it'll barely free rev to 4k so it's gotta be the exhaust!!!!
