Thanks, everyone, for all suggestions. I shall follow through on all of them on the weekend, if it isn't hissing down!
(Most times I open an engine bay, the fault disappears until I am driving home at 2.00am, on a deserted country road,
in sub zero temperatures.) What I need is a hoss.. with Vtec.
Congratulations to vtecmec for winning May/June's Lude Of The Month, with his DIY Turbo BB1 build.

Lousy low revs performance. BB4 JDM Si Vtec
Finally got round to actually doing something about the problem: I wired up a switch to initiate the 'blink' code read.
What a disappointment!! I thought I was about to get some perspective on things, but all that happened was that the 'check engine' light came on, and stayed on until I switched the ignition off again. I tried it with the engine off, and with it running.
Nothing made any difference. All I had was an on/off switch.
Does anyone know what this phenomenon indicates, or is it simply a knackered brain???
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have !

Do you mean you tried the paperclip test with the service plug?
My initial thought when reading your first post was either your valve clearances or lambda/O2 sensor.
Once when I'd had a head swapped after a snapped timing belt the chap had failed to tighten the tappets enough, so one or two had slackened off on the way home. What I experienced is what you described in the opening post. I had to build my speed gradually and I almost didn't make it up one hill I'd lost so much speed!
And a dudd lambda/O2 sensor can starve or overfuel the engine. Have you been able to check your plugs after the occurance to see if they're saturated in fuel? Though it more likely sounds like the engine's being starved of fuel.
If it was a blocked fuel filter or fuel line or injectors you'd have the problem constantly, it wouldn't graduate depending on engine temp.
