That's a shame. I'm going to fit the new discs & pads I've got in the meantime anyway, as it's going to be about 6 months till I get the engine change done I think. So at least I'll have a good set to last me till then. The ones that are on the car now feel pretty tired anyway, so I think the new ones will feel excellent by comparison. And then when I get the engine changed, I can get a stronger setup then. It will be interesting to see what the differences between the calipers is though. Cheers. :)

Anybody thought about wheel size ? The bigger the wheel the more force required to stop it. So when you bolt a set of 19" rims on your car that had 15" on it do you put a set of massive brakes under them ? Well you shoild

Yeah, that's an interesting point. It's got 17's on it atm, so could definitely do with something a bit more substantial.

The outer circumference of your tyre should still be pretty much the same though, and the chances are that even though they're now 17's, the setup probably still weighs less than the original steel 14" setup ;-) ... Although there are a lot of spokes on those rims you have there :?

yeah agreed if the rolling radius is the same then nothing has changed, but if the rolling radius has changed and lets be fair a set of 185 /60/14 is a fair bit smaller than say a 215/45/17. picture a car with no power steering (this is where the youngsters say "what you used to have cars with no power steering") and a standard wheel and your trying to park it, now put that smaller sports steering wheel on it and try to park it, or give it to your misses to park
takes a lot more effort to turn it now which is basically an easy way of explaining what your brakes go through when you upsize on your wheels.
anyway this has gone far enough off topic now i think so i'll shut up

It's a relevant point though. The overall diameter will have been increased over stock, which might have something to do with why the brakes are under performing. I'll get the new ones fitted initially & keep you updated with how I get on with that.

It's also worth noting that the speedo probably won't read right when all the work has been undertaken, due to the larger wheels & different engine. I understand this can be remedied; how though?

Not necessarily. The profile of a 17" tyre should just be that much smaller to keep the overall circumference the same. You just sacrifice handling and comfort that's all.

Are your wheels 17" though? What's your actual tyre size?

i just measured the radius of a 185/55/15 and a 215/45/17 that i just happened to have lying around the garage and there was a 12cm difference between the 2. stood on end the difference was about 6cm guesstimated. :geek:
