The Shopping List

Post by GOONIESnvrSAYdie » Thu Aug 07, 2014 12:25 am

Hey folks,

For the past few weeks I've been reading other peoples threads and trying to figure out what I would need to give my engine a refresh and also gain some extra NA power at the same time. Next year I plan to take my car off the road for a short while and drop the engine out. Not long after buying my car the timing tensioner failed, luckily it didn't damage anything internally but the strain put on one of the balance shafts caused it to squeel terribly once the engine was running so I've removed the belt for now. When I drop the engine out, I'm in two minds as to do a delete or replace them.

I've never done any engine work like this before so obviously won't be undertaking the actual work myself, I'll more than likely have a mechanic friend do it, or send my engine away with the parts I've compiled to be done by someone who knows these engines well. Not that my friend isn't good as his job but specialists are usually the way forward.

Basically I have no idea other than my basic mechanical understanding of engines as to what I should be looking at buying. I'd like to get a list drawn up then over the next 6 months or so I can start buying and ticking off to spread out the cost.

Any advice on the matter is greatly welcomed, preferred parts and even links if you have them as to the best place to buy would help immensely. I'm looking at everything from intake manifolds to gaskets. I'd like to be able to drop the engine out, give it to someone with a box full of bits and ask them to strip it and re-build it with the new goodies :)

My starting point is my H22a JDM Type-S engine. Only engine mods currently are a AEM induction kit and induction pipe and JASMA echaust manifold. The car also came with a de-cat and has the Honda Access back box.

My end game is knowledge that my engine is fresh and now running roughly 250bhp. I'm not looking to go big power, just add some extra torque.

I'll also be doing the clutch and flywheel at this point, I hear ATR clutch and Fidanza lightweight flywheel are the way to go?

Thanks

Gareth

Mod list:

ATR Intake Manifold
Throttle body
ECU piggyback for tune?
ATR Clutch & Fidanza lightweight flywheel

Replace list:

Head gasket
Pistons?
Valves?
Piston rings to cure Vtec smoke

I see Rosko Racing in America are always championing the Euro-R intake mani. Any of you guys running one? Heard of ATR and Skunk being used but never Euro-R. Even a modified RBC they claim. I know intake mani is one of the things I'd need on the list. Who's running what?

The Euro-R is the same as the ATR's. Just the US had the Accord/Torneo Euro-R.

I've got a few bits from Rosko, but I mod'd the manifold myself...

Thanks for the info dude :)

In what way did you modify it? Just had a quick nosey at the thread link. That fuel rail is the nuts. Just a shame they are quite hidden on H engines. One thing I loved about my K series EP3 was how front and center all that was.

You should be able to see it quite easily on mine, but that's not going to be the main eye candy in my bay anyway ;-)

I didn't need to chamfer the top on the manifold flange as I'm mounting it to an A7 head (You have to to fit it to any other H22a head), but I've blanked off most of the hose connectors, relocated the brake servo connection to the back, relocated the temp sensor to the back, blanked off the EGR gubbins and FITV, pocketed out the injector ports to suit my injectors, and port-matched the throttle body and the runners.

Oh I never saw that. How did I miss it? Haha. Let me go back and look. I started my own thread as I didn't want to hijack the other one :)

I'm selling a converted atr manifold in the for sale section.

Most difficult thing with the type s is the tuning, I think the only real budget way is the apaxi avfc or a little more money on the greddy e-managment.

My friends type s track car has most of these mods and only made 190 on a poorly engine. Do make sure she's running sweet first :)
