Prelude wont start =/

Post by rob quilter » Tue Jul 24, 2012 7:24 pm

The Prelude is sorn'd at the moment as its not really being used

Its been off the road for 5 weeks now, I've been starting it every week. This evening is didn't start, it has 5 litres of fuel in, the battery has been on trickle charge.

The electrics work, it just doesn't turn over :( I'm going to change the plugs tomorrow, if that doesn't work I'll change the dizzy and HT leads.

Anyone have any ideas why it would just decide to not start? And I presume 2.0 and 2.2 dizzys are the same?

Hi mate, if its not turning over i'd suspect the starter motor, it happened to mine after being stood, I just gave it a thump with a hammer shaft and it kicked in to life again, its probably the solenoid on its way out. It lasted me about 6 weeks after that then finally packed in altogether. So got new one. Thanks

Put the car in second gear and rock the car back and forth with the handbrake off. Engine off!
This will sometimes free a stuck starter motor.

If that doesn't work, see Ratty's post. ;)

It could be that the battery isn't providing the starter with enough current, if you can connect a set of jump leads and retry it you've then eliminated the battery. If thats ok then check the voltage down to the starter motor and also check the spade terminal (cranking signal) there should be 12v there when the key is turned to the crank position. If all these turn out ok then must be the starter motor. Hope this helps. ;)

Have you checked to see if it's getting a spark yet, before you go replacing plugs, leads and dizzy etc?

Don't think 2.2 Vtec dizzies are the same as 2.0i either bud.

It could still be the starter. Hammering doesn't always work, so try pushing the car forwards/backwards whilst in gear to turn it manually.

EDIT: I know this has already been written, but I'd already written it ;-)
