This is standard practice sadly. Although the reason is not obvious at first.
For seo purposes, the seller doesnt want to lose their unique url which is building up rank in google. If they go out of stock they dont want to cancel the listing and lose the url, they just put the price sky high and/or change the picture in the hope no one will buy it.
You can thank google and various seo houes for these kind of antics.
Also ebay is the worst kind of place for keyword spamming descriptions and titles. Fascinating and annoying all at the same time
