Never understood these things in a car where you still need to put a key in the ignition and turn the first two clicks... It's more effort

That's how the OEM start button works on the S2000, and the Civic previous to the current one

I knew the S2K had a start button, but you still have to put a key in and turn it two clicks?!

Yup

threw me completely first time I drove one

I used to think it was a pointless set up until I tried it, but I can say it actually feels more 'right' than having to twist and hold a key

It's only the brand new Honda's with keyless entry that have one push start! And tbh keyless entry does my nut

such a horrible feature to demonstrate well on the forecourt

See that makes sense, but turning a key and then pushing a button is a two stage operation as aposed to just turning a key
