Not too sure what you mean by rotational, but they have to be lined up as they only work along one plane. It's to stop them moving forwards or backwards (when fitted to the car) and keeps the control arm stable. Oh right, so they're not actually "ball joints"?... They're "hinges"?
That's what I meant by "rotational"... You could obviously turn them in the hole before they're pressed in, so it does matter what position you rotate them to. If that makes sense.
