Mine at work have MDF shelves too. These ones at lidl say max load per shelf is 175kg, so I Imagine they will be MDF.

^ 5 shelves at 175 is 875.

Say you space the shelves evenly along the height and apply the max load of 175kg per shelf, that means those skinny metal arm/frame bits between the ground and 1st shelf have to withstand 875, 1-2: 700, 2-3: 525, etc.

Although that is downwards force along a vertical plane (I'm not an engineer so I don't know if that's how you describe it ) so I'm sure they can take it. With the shelf frame and the shape of the uprights it's like two spooning L's, and although a linear force pushing will cause it to buckle more easily than a equalled structure (i.e. tube or square pipe), the opposite upright has it's composition flipped so more force would have to be applied to buckle the outside -> inwards than is required to push from in to out.

I explained that horrendously but the amount of loading bays I've put on scaffolds that look too minimal to take silly weight kN/m^2 testify a good structure can do more than you'd expect.

The biggest difference with economy shelving is whether they have a support brace across the middle of each shelf. The Lidl ones don't (although thanks for the post rob - I'll definitely have a look at the other bits)!

So they will sag over time, chipboard or MDF aside.

The ebay ones have a central brace, so no sagging. I have MDF shelves rated at 265Kg but they don't have the central brace so they've sagged. I've also got the chipboard ones off ebay and they're cheaper and have lasted better.

Either way, being they're wooded, it would be a very simple mod just to simply screw a length of angle or two diagonally from one corner to the other.

I have chip board shelves with 2 prelude batteries sat on 1 shelf for maybe 2 years now.

it looks like decent chip board not the real cheap crap

no bending yet... maybe it depends on the spacing of the shelves, my rack is similar to these, and from ebay.
