4th gen front numberplate

Post by ATR84 » Sun Apr 19, 2015 11:03 am

Apart from in the bin what is the best thing to do with a 4th gen front numberplate. I dont like the black plastic holder on the front. Is it easy to remove?

Then once removed should the plate just go back where the holder was, off to the side, lower down?

What do people think?

Mine is in the lower bar, I used a couple of right-angle brackets screwed onto the underside of the bar, with Velcro to hold the plate on.
As you can see it's a smaller than usual plate. I keep the legal one in the boot, already velcroed up, so I can swap them if called upon to do so!

(Unfortunately the previous owner had the plate screwed on, and I haven't got around to filling the holes yet!)

I think it looks best positioned centrally attached using the supplied holder. :P

On my last BB4 Lude I used some of those sticky backed metal number plate fixers from Halfords their shaped a bit like a triangle with a sticky bit on one end and a bolt hole in the other, can't find them of Halfords web site currently, then bent to a right angle and then bolted through the middle bar and the plate stuck on see picture below

Might just to do the same to this BB1 when I get time :?

My silver lude when I got it (UK size font)...

Image

Import size font and plate trimmed to fit the OEM frame...

Image

Image

Same plate and frame, but with UKDM front lip...

Image

And then same plate again, but on custom brackets (no frame)...

Image

Image

Simple home-made brackets and can be shifted about...

Image

They just slide on (tightly)...

And can only be removed once the plate is removed, so secure.

But of course the no plate look is best ;) ...

Hmmm.

Does anyone know what the penalty for having no front number plate is?

Of all the options I definitely think it needs to be offset and on the lower grill to look best. The 'nose' of the 4th gen is a prominent feature of the front end so it's kind of mad that the OEM plate holder covers it up

I was considering the same with my 5th gen today... Just before I fit my new plate. I ran my 3rd gen without one for a time with no repercussions. I know they're pretty slack around here though, so I'd always refit it once I was going to venture further out.

On to the road?

I bet that costs a lot for something that isn't at all legal, and therefore you may as well just run plateless :?
