There was a lady opposite me who was retired, lived alone and spent all day staring into the street looking for things to moan about. She was not chuffed when I moved in with all my cars, even though they were all kept on my drive bar one. I was changing the fuel filter on my Xsara one afternoon and she came out to 'have a word' passive aggressive style - 'this isn't the kind of neighborhood where people have old cars outside their house, it's unsightly, you are obviously running a business repairing and selling cars etc.' It's just basically absolute kebabs who live in a little world of their own and throw their toys out the pram when somebody doesn't conform to their idea of normal. I politely told her that some of us don't want to spend our money on brand new cars, and that no I don't run a business but my hobby is maintaining older cars. She didn't like it but I hadn't risen to her challenge and she backed off. She mentioned something to my girlfriend at a later date, my girlfriend just told her to drokk off  Luckily she moved, but it's miserable having somebody like that by your house as you constantly feel like there's going to be confrontation everytime you go outside to try and enjoy your hobby :(

Best of luck with this mate - I think best bet is to deny selling any parts, just say you kept bits you needed and scrapped the rest.

Is it a woman complaining? Put your own complaint in, say you've been watching their house and scores of strange men have been turning up at funny hours leading you to suspect they're running a brothel from their home address

I was going to say, just direct them to here  They'll see that you're an enthusiast. As said, it shouldn't matter that you're selling the parts from the car. They were your own car and sadly you get more money for breaking a car, so who would they be to say you're not aloud to get the max for your car.

Just keep your cool and be polite :)

I would imagine you will need to differentiate between stripping a car you own before scrapping it from buying a car specifically to dismantle and sell for parts at a profit.

You will need to prove that no business activity has taken place.

i wouldnt worry about it, the wording they use is just procedure and makes you sound guilty straight away. They would need witnesses to say they have work done by you and you would need to have a traceable income by way of invoices and bank deposits because theres nothing wrong with flogging a few bits here and there if you feel like it. 90% of gumtree users should be getting these letters. They might watch you for a bit though so keep your eyes peeled.

Don't worry about it Marc.
some people really have nothing better to do.
It's just the council following procedure following a complaint.

I am just waiting for a similar letter to land through my door now I have seen this.
I am now breaking my 3rd lude in the space of a year. I can only imagine what all the curtain twitchers must be thinking.

about 15 years ago i used to run a business from my garage on the back of my old house (evenings and weekends) and i would have a visit from the council on a regular basis. i obviously denied this and was eventually left alone. a garage on your own house is for keeping your car in and not for repairing it is what i was told so i eventually got premises to keep the wanker of a neighbour i had at the time happy. i would just tell them you repaired your own car and deny breaking anything. photos can show a car in various states of assembly/disassembly but can not prove anything, videos on the other hand well they are just an invasion of privacy. politely tell them to go fist themselves with a barbed wire glove.
