just a question about the etch primer, i always thought that should be applied to the bear metal etc so it bonds with the surface?

etch primer is for bare metal, but i use it for a basic covering as it really sticks to old paint well. when i have a brand new panel that comes in the black protection paint, 100% when i sand it down there will be exposed bare metal. the same applies to repaired bodywork. even though a panel may have bodyfiller and high build primer, there will sometimes be exposed bare metal, so it makes sense to etch prime the whole vehicle prior to painting. this also allows any darker spots, like on your bonnet to be 'toned down' so when i apply your paint it's not going to appear through your new paint.
