(LB) Aerial & Rear Wiper Removal

Post by NafemanNathan » Tue Feb 07, 2012 11:20 am

I parked my Patch up in her place to rest for the up and coming months the other day. She's not ideally sheltered, but at least I can keep an eye on her from the house :) ...

Anyway, today between drizzle showers I finally started on the strip-down. I've still got all my engine mods and PAS removal to crack on with, but I'll wait for a constantly sunny day for that ;-)

So today's first task was the removal of the boot interior which would then allow me to get at the aerial. I won't bore you with pictures of boot inerds, so I'll just show the hole that remained once I'd removed the aerial ;-)...

Image

The intention was to simply fill the hole with the bung Nick (Vanzep) kindly sent me. Unfortunately, because the bung itself was circular and the hole ellipse... It meant the bung wouldn't sit flush, and kinked at the top. This still may have kept a seal around the neck, but I didn't want to risk water getting in, so I decided to apply a little silicone  ...

Image

Image

Gross looking I know lol, but once it's dry I'll rub off all the excess from the top of the bung and it should look ok ;-) It's only a temporary fix until I can visit the bodyshop anyway, as I'll get it filled in properly then 8)

The next job was to remove the rear wiper. Easily done... 4 bolts, a lock nut and a plug and it's out. Now this should be a simpler hole to "bung". I'd read that the hole was 30mm diameter, so I'd ordered a 30mm bung from ebay. A rather fancy chrome one (that I was gonna spray black) which had a rubber washer and a locking nut to sandwich the glass and seal it properly and also be un-nickable! :)

I measured the hole to confirm the 30mm for Nucleustylz. It was closer to 31mm, but that shouldn't matter...

Image

... Trouble is the blinkin outside diameter of the frikin blanking plug was 30mm wasn't it?! So it just falls through the hole!
So off to Halfords I pop to find me a true 30mm diameter bung. They didn't have any. Wasted trip! Although it was worth it to see this guy fitting his new windscreen wipers in the car park :D ...

Image

So I decided to improvise. I searched the house for anything of 30-31mm diameter... That I didn't need. I thought a bit more silicone won't do any harm. So I came up with this :D ...

Genius I thought! It's "Cherry" Coke flavour by the way! ;-) .. Colour's inkeeping with my front wings to! See I knew there was a reason they were that colour

So that's today's update :) Looks a lot better for it in my opinion (Or at least it will). Saves a bit of weight Removed the spare wheel and jack as well). Removes a couple redundant components and makes me smile :)

oh, and sorry to be a bit late with this tip, but best way to finish silicone is with an ice-cube - just use it like a sanding block once it is just starting to skin.
