As Dobbs says, there's still a chance some of the valves could have been damaged. As the belt snaps the crank will carry on spinning and who knows what the cams (and therefore valves) end up doing.

To me, it'd be daft not inspecting the valves/head/pistons before refitting a new belt with pump and tensioners.
