Cleaned up SA3R Centre Caps

Post by NafemanNathan » Thu Nov 22, 2012 11:29 pm

Not a major update, but I don't feel this thread is quite long enough, so I'm just bulking it out a bit

I have absolutely loads of side projects with this damn build, but a lot of them I'm stuggling to do without being outside or making loads of noise or mess. But tonight I decided to tidy up the SA3R centre caps, circlips and nuts...

The black nuts are ones I won for a couple of quid on ebay and then sold on two of the original nuts that had all been chewed up for £20 odd  These black ones were in much better condition and just needed the paint removing. I used the buffer tool on the Dremel which is relatively quiet ;-) All the other parts just needed a bit of polishing with T-Cut.

Not perfect, but much better. Once they're on the wheels all the way down there, they'll look great :)

I don't know how though! Surely if you have a set of these you're gonna be carefull doing them up? :? They're never actually "rounded-off" though, they just look kerbed, which is surely near to impossible?

Good work bud - they came up great!

Annoyingly my centre caps someone has glued some extra Honda 'H' emblems ontop, so I can't even take mine apart to refurb. Makes it a right PITA!

The 'H' emblems are actually pretty decent 3D embossed ones, but would have been nice to get the original Volk emblems (I have one so far! :? ).

Weird as you both say about them getting mashed up a bit. Mine has the original locking key for the nut which is kind of cool.

Love these wheels though!

Are your Volks centre caps all metal? Surely you could soak them in something that could disintergrate just the glue maybe?

Yeah I plan on making a spanner up for mine :) ... Maybe even with nylon faces ;-)

Polished Throttle Body with Knife Edge Butterfly

Post by NafemanNathan » Wed Nov 28, 2012 10:44 pm

Cheers Mart :) Bring on 2014 I say ;-)

Well I've pretty much finished the mods to the throttle body which is part of the all new intake setup.

I've had it a while. It's a DH Racing Throttle Body, which has a 74mm opening which tapers down to 68mm. The back opening was almost a mirror polish which had been produced from the machining, but the 74mm opening had been achieved by grinding by the looks of it. It was perfectly formed, but the finish was rather course. I wanted it super smooth also ;-)

This is how it looked originally...

Image

Image

Image

So I removed the butterfly and set about polishing it. It doesn't look that smooth in the pics but I can assure you running your finger over it feels like a puck on ice ;-) ...

Image

Image

And then the butterfly itself. It was square edged and 2mm thick. Not exactly a wind break, but I wanted less resistance. So I gave a drawing to the CNC machine guy at work and he turned my butterfly into this...

Image

Image

Image

I then simply gave it a good old buff!...

Image

The score marks on it are from when I removed it and a few burrs on the axle cut in. Since I buffed it you can see them, but you can't feel them. I then took a needle file to the burrs on the axle and also ground the corners off of the axle with the dremel.

All back together minus new screws and...

Image

Image

Image

When holding it up to the light there is an obvious amount of light around the butterfly when closed, although the pic shows more than there actually is. (I think my CNC guy got a bit carried away with the clean up lol), but this should be fine as it should actually help idle on warm up as I've deleted the FITV and the IACV, and being the whole point of this car is to be a high revver I don't see any potential issues ;-) ...
