What causes an engine to cut out when stopping?...

Post by NafemanNathan » Tue Apr 28, 2015 1:55 pm

I've had an intermittent problem with my 5th gen cutting out when I pull up to junctions or traffic calming and stopping. The revs drop right down and then it just cuts out. Starts up no problem straight after though, and even yesterday I managed to accidentally bump start it as I was going downhill  It doesn't seem to matter at what temperature the car is at, and if I try and get it to do it, most of the time it won't.

I've had it with other cars in the past. What generally causes this?

Also, my 5th gen, when starting up from cold. If I was to blip the throttle the revs actually decrease from idle and it can cut out completely. If I slowly dip the throttle from cold start the revs increase no problem. When I blip the throttle it's almost like the engine is suffercating... Either not enough air or fuel is getting through. This could be due to my map, but still, it's strange.

My main concern is the dying when halting though. As said it doesn't matter what temp the car is at, although generally it happens after about 5 miles of driving and possibly without stopping in between

From past experience, mainly the o2 sensor.

I've also had cutting out problems from the ICU & Coil in the dizzy.

On my old Accord, the HG caused similar problems.

Any EML come on?

Hmmm, I've got a few O2 sensors floating about I think. She is running exceedingly rich at the minute, so it could be sooted up.

I fitted an MSD coil the other day. I did actually cause a bit of a spark when undoing one of the lower dizzy cap bolts. I hadn't disconnected the battery at that stage and my ratchet handle swung down and touched on the starter motor positive :? The only repercussion it seemed to have was my lights-on beep doesn't work anymore, so I just assumed it's blown the fuse. That goes through the ICU though, so there's a chance something's happened there. And also, although my revs used to drop and the car cut out prior to me removing the OEM ignition coil, since the MSD coil it's definitely seems to cut out easier (No hesitation, just cuts out).

No cells thrown.

What's "HG"?
