As you said Andy, it wasn't a sound you could really describe easily on the forum, so I would have been surprised if anyone had guessed it :lol:

Thought it was quite funny how we discovered it though...

*Both leaning over the engine.*
"I'm not sure, it doesn't sound metallic enough to sound like it's coming from the gearbox. It kind of sounds like a fan"...
*Spin*
"Ahhhh"
* :facepalm: *

Glad you got it sorted with no real major issues.

Cheers Mart, yeah could be a cv joint - I wouldn't know about that tbh. We established in another thread that the car has most likely been in an accident at some point, so I thought it might be the steering rack as there is a bit of play there too. Does low speed knocking sound symptomatic of a cv joint then, or are there other likely possibilities?

It didn't really sound like a CV joint to me. Normally when a CV is on its way out it's consistant with when it makes a noise. Your knocking wasn't consistant enough for me to think it was a CV joint. It's more like a not so crucial bush is shot and need replacing. Ideally you need to lift the car up and give everything a good heave-ho. Maybe check your droplinks.

Ok, sounds like a plan. Haven't really got the spare cash to start looking at it till the end of the month now, that's why I didn't raise the issue just yet. But it's worth knowing what I need to look for. :worms:

I guess the main points worth highlighting with this problem are;

a) it only really knocks at low speed round a right hand corner
b) the steering does feel mildly 'loose/disassociated/vague' much of the time
c) there are NO knocks or rattles when driving along in a straight line for example, and going over bumps & potholes, etc. So perhaps not lower joints?

What do we make of that?
