Brakes don't work on a Mk3 golf if you run out of fuel, found that out tonight, just saying

I was lucky in that I'd travelled 100 miles to a dyno day where I mentioned to Rob "I need to get my cambelt changed... I have no idea of the mileage on it", and then got a mere 1/2 mile away from home on the way back again where it pinged on me going up a hill

The thought that it could happened to you at any point, any distance, any weather and in any situation isn't something I'd want to be gambling with again.

What happens when you're at that busy junction in rush hour wanting to pull out? The traffic won't stop or slow down, but you knowing you've got some power think you can pull out though the small gap coming up and merge into flowing traffic. Here it comes!.... Oh SNAP!!! I've just rolled out into fast oncoming traffic and I have no drive! Oh look, it's alright, that car's swerving to avoid me and disappeared into the car behind me... For a moment there I thought he was going to hit me! Phew!!!

At that time my car had done 90k odd miles, I had been driving it assuming it would have been changed at the 60k interval. But for peace of mind I wanted to change it. I had inspected it an it looked fine. As said, it was a gamble and I've learnt from my mistake. But at the same time I don't drive like a gentleman's sausage! (No egg jokes please).

That said, you've been talking about driving like you stole it knowing for sure that you have a 22 year old cambelt! Now that's not sensible!
