But if I'm in the market for a mint Prelude, why would I go and by an ATR?
chrismc wrote:£2k on the face of it for a cosmetically well sorted 4g isn't a huge amount- but the car could be hiding other nasties of course. It would need to be very very good for that money to tempt me
There are far too many pessimistic opinions on what a possibly mint looking Prelude "might be hiding". Until you look and find any undesirables why price it down!

I've not once said you can't have your opinion bud, but you've devalued this car without having any knowledge of the car's history. To me the car looks mint, although not to my taste, but because it's not to my taste it doesn't mean I think I should get it for half price, it just means I won't buy it. If it was to my taste and I was in the market for one then I'd go check it out. I also don't want a brand new Toyota Prius, but it doesn't mean I can rock up at the Toyota dealership and expect one for half price! Someone else will want one, so the price applies to them ;-)

And Newkid, I can't argue with that, because I don't think like that :? All I can say is vicsious circle

Trouble is mate there just aren't enough really good ludes about nowadays to affect insurance values/residuals. Just a sad fact

Incidentally something like your car would tempt me to pay strong money- very tidy, standard looks, great engine, money spent in the right areas etc.
Agree 100% and that is my point y'see :) (oh and thanks! 8-) )
I TOO would pay for an example like mine, which makes two of us, and so it goes on, until you have a higher market value
It's those clean examples that will start to command higher values, which will pull up the rest.

Example: I know I hark on about my Mustang but it's a good example here: bought it for 10k (2k over what I wanted to spend because I could see how all the work had been done). less than two years later I sold it for 15k - The reason was everyone started to buy up Shelbys, those that suddenly couldn't afford them would start to look for the next best thing, i.e. mine - A clean example of the same year, but not Shelby.
Is it WORTH 15k? Well that depends how much you want to drive round in a 40 year old American icon. Is a Shelby worth 50k to me? Nope, to many yes, but not to me, and that's the crux of it.
When you get to the point where something like, say, my car is going to cost someone 5k (because frankly I wouldn't part with it for less than that), a sorted chassis and strong engine for 2k starts to look like a good buy, even if you have to 'dilute to taste'
So, when the demand for well cared for/sorted examples goes up, which it will due to sheer scarcity (albeit not in the same vein as Shelbys I accept!! - the number of people looking for a clean lude will be less, but the effect is the same), good clean chassis/examples they can put a good engine into etc will become more appealing, and therefore command a higher value.
To ME, that car is worth a look if I was in the market - there's plenty I would change of course, but it's about what driving a lude is worth TO ME - which of course is obvious, hence I wouldn't have spent what I have on mine otherwise.

On the flip side - I sold my Mustang because I COULDN'T AFFORD not to - it surpassed it's value TO ME and having 15k sat in a garage became a concern, especially when I was trying to buy a house/get married all at the same time!

I know what you are saying, but just to clarify I have not once said that X amount of mods adds X amount of value, quite the opposite.
I am looking at purely the 'desirable' aspects WE ALL look for in a lude - usually NON rusty arches/excellent bodywork is very high on the agenda....

Ok, let me re-write my first comment with 3 extra words - I think it would be a nice car if you removed all the chavvy bits and maybe £5-600 off the asking price.

There, now I haven't devalued anything (I didn't even know I had the power haha) ..but, for the record, if I went into a showroom with a view to buying a new car, you can guarantee I will be walking out of there with a discount ;)

The new car parallel is a good one actually - I would never buy new, because frankly the 'extra' (i.e. the massive depreciation hit) is simply not worth it......to me :D

It'd be nice if he valeted the car and delivered it on your drive, provided you with a KFC bargain bucket and then reimbursed you with the full amount you'd paid for the car as you seemed a nice guy as well though ;-)

Maybe this tells a story- not as mint as portrayed &/or over-priced? :?:
